AUSTRALIA AT THE VENICE BIENNALE

Research Assistant

As a research assistant on this project, I was deeply involved in uncovering and curating the history behind Australia’s contributions to the Biennale. My responsibilities included:

  • Conducting extensive research on Australian representation at the Venice Biennale from 1954 onwards, compiling the stories of key artists and works.

  • Sourcing images for inclusion in the book, including artworks and artist portraits, to create a visually compelling narrative.

  • Building a comprehensive database of exhibited artworks and ensuring accurate labeling and details for publication.

  • Obtaining copyright approvals for included artworks and photographic images.

  • Proofreading manuscript pages to ensure the final product met the highest standards of quality and accuracy.

  • Performing various administrative tasks to support the editorial and production process.

This book recounts a rich history of Australian art at the Venice Biennale, one of the world's most prestigious art exhibitions. From the works of Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, and Thea Proctor to contemporary icons like Rover Thomas, Patricia Piccinini, and Shaun Gladwell, the book illuminates the untold stories of Australia's artistic presence on the international stage. It charts a journey through over a century of innovative works that have shaped Australia's relationship with the Biennale, from early unofficial inclusions to its first official delegation in 1954 and beyond.
